چکیده
Comparative Advantage, Segmentation and Informal Earnings: A Marginal Treatment Effects Approach This paper employs recently developed econometric models of marginal treatment effects to analyze the relevance of labor market comparative advantage and segmentation in the participation and earnings performance of workers in formal and informal jobs in Argentina. A novel household data set on informality and self-employment and information on labor inspections targeting informal work was collected for this purpose. We account for endogeneity and selectivity issues in our estimations. Our results offer evidence for both comparative advantage and segmentation. No significant differences between the earnings of formal salaried workers and the self-employed are found, once accounted for positive selection bias into formal work. This is consistent with labor market comparative advantage considerations. On the contrary, informal salaried employment carries significant earnings penalties, alongside negative selection bias and modest positive sorting. These results are more consistent with segmentation. JEL Classification: C31, J24, J31, J42, O17

Using estimates of earnings functions in Ghana, this paper examines patterns of labor market segmentation with regard to formal and informal employment. Persistent earnings differentials are used as indicators of limited mobility across segments of the employed labor force. We find evidence of labor market segmentation between formal and informal employment and between different categories of i...
متن کاملModelling Formal vs. Informal Employment and Earnings: Micro-econometric Evidence for Brazil
Many developing economies, especially in Latin America, appear to be experiencing structural growth in their informal sectors, inconsistent with traditional views that the informal sector acts as a buffer against unemployment, or is symptomatic of labour market segmentation. This paper presents microeconometric evidence for Brazil that challenges this conventional wisdom. A model of informal se...

In spite of its predominant economic weight in developing countries, little is known about informal sector income dynamics vis-à-vis the formal sector. Some works have been done in this field using household surveys, but they only consider some emerging Latin American countries and a few African countries. As a matter of consequence, there is still no way to generalize the (diverging) results t...

The optimal allocation of water is importance because Yazd province has very limited access to water resources. The optimal allocation requires that the water price be approximately equal to its economic value. Accordingly, the present paper calculated the economic value of water consumed by manufacturing industries in Yazd province. The Cobb-Douglas, transcendental, translog, generalized quadr...
متن کاملEstimating the Effects of Family Background on the Return to Schooling
This article examines the causal link between family background characteristics—parental education and family size—and returns to schooling. I implement a model of schooling and earnings with heterogeneous returns to education using data from the Occupational Change in a Generation Survey. I find that men raised in larger families have substantially lower returns to education, whereas the combi...
